Here is a blast from the past, Full Flash Websites, here is a conversation from 10 years ago that makes interesting reading now:
[Website Designers] Thanks for the website order, so it seems you have bought a Flash template and want us to use this I understand, what exactly do you want us to do? I know it’s a strange question but normally we have a full proposal and give our recommendations before starting a project but it seems you have been a big gung-ho and purchased a Flash Template already for your new website.
[Website Owner] My Website Flash guy looked into this and I want to change the branding
The flash movie clip for each character is a separate mini video clip with four layers and its own time line so we need a new layer for each letter x 4 plus repositioning them and animating
He told me this will take about 2 days and cost £300, we can start work with a deposit of £150 and once completed you can decide if you want to change the menu button text also.
We would also be able to integrate this Flash menu into a website for you and if you are interested in this afterwards? How much to do the whole lot? Web page and logos and buttons, flash etc it’s a diving website and mostly filled with details of courses and “about us”.
[Website Designers] Take your choice of our website packages but if you want the menus in flash I would need to really ask you to re-consider as we believe this technology is becoming less and less popular on the Internet and will involve long term maintenance and will possibly not work with future browsers and mobile devices, in the current climate I would recommend the highest package you can afford to get the very best SEO (search engine optimisation) both onsite and offsite as well as receiving our special attention to ensure it has every chance of being a high ranking / successful site
Obviously, we love designing / building and promoting websites and have done your friends websites and the SEO for all 3 of them (that’s why they have all 3 in the top 10 for their primary search terms)
We currently have orders for 2 other websites in your sector that my colleagues are starting in 1 week.
If you had come to me first I would have persuaded you strongly against considering a Flash Menu site as its not SEO friendly and expensive to upgrade / maintain, we rarely have used Flash and when we have (2 years ago) we use Flash sparingly and only as it can look attractive on some websites. We know how to enhance the SEO of the flash navigation and if you go with the premium site we will only charge a token fee to customise your flash banner to your own brand, the price you pay includes everything (domain name, hosting, email, design, updates and SEO)
If you don’t want to supply the content our content creators are expert at that and can create pages of text content that is unique / fresh / perfectly formatted grammar / syntax and has a Fleich reading score of over 60 (Google friendly) and we will charge you approx. £50 per page and we optimise the text regularly as well as updating / improving your meta information on your page (meta title, description and keywords).
Hope this isn’t too geeky but rest assured we build W3C standard (internet standards on coding) good sites that are very reasonably priced, that rank well and are done ethically and built for the long term (no ‘black hat’ or bad coding that is likely to incur penalties).
Actually, the Flash guy has just given me a progress update and shown me your banner and how he will amend it to show your company logo, and it actually looks quite nice, only done two letters but looking good already but really think you should scrap the Flash menu idea as it will invariably cause you compatibility issues going forward.
[Website Owner] I really want the flash menu as everyone says it looks nice and attractive.
Update 2018 – Website was created with a flash menu system but that was upgraded to a standard ‘reponsive’ menu 5 years later with an improvement in SEO and conversions noted almost instantly.
