As a real world example here is a problem and solution we offered for a client with a CMS system (they update their own website text) when they wanted to know if they can update their own javascript photo gallery:
[website client] Firstly The website looks great, everyone that sees it says its the best one in our sector. But I am very confused over the fact that we have not got access to our photos on the photo gallery page. We though we would have a website that we could manage ourselves, and we have been given this but one of the problems in the past was that we could not get the photos uploaded onto the website. We didn’t know we would not have access to update the photos pages. I can understand that we don’t have access to the menu photos down the side of each page.
[delicious webdesign] Happy to grant you access to the photos page on your CMS system (and have done this now) but the gallery is so technical (it has to be that way to work well) that access by yourself could be problematic and if you dont change them correctly then there will be lots of display problems. Its possible that you can delete the pics but adding a pic requires html knowledge and requires you to resize and optimise two version of the image then upload them to a server. You have admin access to other pages and control over those pages but the gallery page was never specifically mentioned and there is no ‘user friendly’ CMS system that allows easy changes to a ‘comprehensive’ photo gallery. Thanks for the update about the final payment for your website redesign project for your Thurrock Gateway based business.
[website client] Further to our conversation about the photo gallery. We have some understanding of html. We know there are two images one small and one large (have seen the link from the small to the large in CMS), the images are presumably stored in a folder on the hosting server? Can you tell us how to put images in the folder on to the hosting server? If you are able to show me how to remove one image from the gallery page and add another I should be able to become self sufficient.
As we run several events throughout the year we may need to add several photos, but obviously adding another page would mean another tab on each page. Apart from a blog can you suggest any other way to add more photos.
[delicious webdesign] The only way to do this is to give you ftp access to the website but previously people have tried to do this themselves and it always ends up with website owners corrupting / breaking the page and / or website and involves stress / hassle and costs. (for yourselves due to website downtime and for us in fixing the site). Deleting images will be such a small job it would take us 60 seconds to do this and will not invoice for such small changes as I anticipate you wont need to delete that many / that often.
I really wouldn’t recommend you updating your own galleries as you would need to rename / optimise / resize and then create two pics for each photo to exact sizes then upload them and link them from newly created html.
I think if you get lots of photos and dont want them all on one gallery then in the future we could make you a master gallery that links to the sub-galleries – like this page (master gallery) http://www.denva-interiors.co.uk/brochure-galleries.html or even a page like this http://www.fitted-bedroom-furniture.co.uk/services.html that would lead onto your photo galleries.
You can upload new photos yourself if you take our advice and get a blog for your site but your gallery is bespoke and every photo needs to be resized / optimised and have two version of it so that part of the site is not updatable by yourself.
If you have new photos at a later date then we can add them to the site for you, to make it more efficient in terms of our time and effort (as well as cost) if you have updates for your site you should batch them up and give them to us in one go.
