I want more website visitors

Had an inquiry from a business owner that was concerned about his website’s position in the search engine, the following exchange shows that even a well optimised site needs regularly reviewing and website owners should be careful when uploading images to their blogs:

It still isn’t showing anything sooner than page 3 for [key search term] and I think I’m missing out on quite a lot of possible work opportunities. I can’t understand how [my competitor’s] website is permanently on page 1 when they have half the pages and half the content of my site. Do you have any ideas?

max images should be 800*600 px and about 100kb only (some of yours are over 1mb !)
We use photo resizer software to achieve this.
Page load speed has recently been talked about a lot by Matts Cutts at Google who have said it is a ranking factor, this ‘may’ be the reason for your relative low visitor numbers / ranking.
Your website age is now 4 years old which is good compared with comparable builders sites.
Looking at your stats compared with other people in your sector you have comparable visitor numbers but you have only 1/5 of the visitor numbers of other [websites] that are very optimised and that we have worked on. Going forward my suggestions for you.
1, Reduce those massive images on your blog
2, Add more / regular blog posts – do this consistently – make sure text is unique.
3, Get as many links as you can to your site (ask other [similar business owners] to swap links with you)
4, Give us more testimonials from your clients
5, Create a Facebook Group or a Twitter account for your business and invite your friends and clients to join. Update these pages regularly with your news.
Other suggestions
1 Post on a forum that is related to your business or a general business forum relevant to your country / region.
2 Revisit every site you have ever joined and ensure your website is added to your profile.
3 Add a video on Youtube Video and then display it on your blog
4 One thing that is missing is image descriptions so please give us a description of each image on each gallery
