WordPress updates (wordpress application and plugins) can be completed by us or by our clients, this depends on the agreement we reach for you, here is an example conversation we had about wordpress updates recently
[Website Designers] While we was looking at your wordpress posts within the Admin section we noticed that your wordpress admin area hasn’t been updated since we built your site. It’s important that you update WordPress and plugins whenever they are available. Hackers are always looking for vulnerabilities and web sites that are not up to date are easier for hackers to get in.
We know it’s a pain to keep everything up to date all the time, so I have put together a security system called Delicious WordPress Security and it helps you keep the hackers out from your admin area. It doesn’t update your WordPress but it protects your backend from hackers. Then if a persistent hackers does end up getting in, I can restore your website back to new within 2 hours.
You asked how to update your wordpress website after I had sent though the instructions and admin access details, to give more instructions is a bit difficult to do because there are a few variables. If it’s not done right, you may lose the site. Ideally we should do a backup of your site first just incase the updates go wrong. To update all your plugins and WordPress itself, you should only need to click the update buttons.
1. To update WordPress login to the admin area by going to the link provided then click on the Please Update Now link at the top of the page in the light yellow box. Then follow the instructions.
2. To update the plugins, click on the Plugins/Installed Plugins link in the lefthand sidebar. Then click update on all the plugins that have a pink background. Click the Update Now link and follow the instructions.
It is pretty important to have a backup of your site before you do any updates, just incase something goes wrong.
[Website Client] Please do a backup.Let me know when you have done it and how I get in to admin. I have a few photos I could put on a may even get some customer testimonials for the site.
[Website Designers] I have made a backup of your site and while I was in the backend, I also did an update of the plugins and WordPress version. So now everything in the backend is up to date. As far as updating the site it can still be done the way we are doing it now. You email me what you want, I do it and you pay me. Doing it this way, you will know that it is being done right and you won’t have to worry about it.
[Website Client] This is fine for the major stuff but is there anyway I can, with my limited skill add photos and update things? I am trying to get the FB likes up but found it expensive to do via advertising.I do try and add photos on there of jobs we are doing. It was your intial email from you that started me on the idea of being able to update things, You are saying the admin  area has not been updated, is this something that I should be doing? If so how do I set about it? I have just asked my business partners to try and get the FB liked by a few of their followers as they have about 2000 at the last count, then perhaps we can do something with that.Is it easy to put things about FB on the bottom of emails to get clients to Like. As you can see I am really out of my depth with this sort of thing.
Its probably best that we stick to the business and let Delicious Webdesign update and support the websites.  I am still trying to get my new local number for Tilbury once I get itI will give you the details to update the site. Also like to  add Facebook to the website. Now trying to work out how to add signature and logo to emails.
[Website Designers] Sure there is. You can do what I did when I first started. There are heaps of video tutorials online that take you step by step through the whole process.I can’t do much more than actually sit down with you for a couple of weeks and teach you one on one on how to look after your website. WordPress is one of the easiest website to look after once you know the basics and the cheapest ways for you to learn the basics is to read stuff. Whenever I want to learn something; I do a Google search. To learn how to update a WordPress website if i didn’t know I would search Google for “how to update latest version of WordPress”. There will be heaps of tutorials that have step by step instructions. If you don’t want to go down that route, I am happy to provide you with a step by step instructions, but we would have to charge you for our time. I really want to help you. But you have to decide is it cheaper to pay me to do it for you or can you teach yourself and save yourself money. I am more than happy to take your money but think long term it would be in your best interest to do it yourself.
